What is an RD?

  • The food and nutrition experts

Registered Dietitians (RD) are considered to be the food and nutrition experts. RD's can be found working in a variety of settings including hospitals, schools, community and public health settings, fitness centers, physicians offices, private practice, and many more.

Top reasons to consult an RD include:

    • Medical nutrition therapy - if you have diabetes, cardiovascular problems, digestive problems, or elevated blood pressure, or other medical reasons.
    • Weight management - if you need to lose or gain weight.
    • Pregnancy -if you're pregnant or trying to conceive as well as guidance and support for breastfeeding.
    • Eating disorders- if you or someone you care for has issues with eating healthfully and body image.
    • Healthy eating/lifestyle - RD"s can help you sort through the misinformation and help you create goals for living a healthy lifestyle.
    • Gastric bypass surgery - if you are thinking of having or have had the surgery.
    • Sports performance - if you want to improve your performance as an athlete.
    • Aging - if you're caring for an aging parent, an RD can help with hydration, special diets, more.
  • In order to become an RD, one must complete all of the following:

    • Earn a minumum of a Bachelor's Degree from an accredited university or college. This includes course work approved by the Commission on Accreditation for Dietetics Education (CADE) of the American Dietetic Association (ADA).
