As a nutritionist and intuitive eating counselor, people often ask me what it means to be an intuitive eater. My reply is often followed up with "you mean I can eat anything I want?" Well the answer is, yes!  I don't believe in telling people what not/to eat; the decision is ultimately up to you. A large piece of learning to be an intuitive eater is self care. Are you taking care of yourself physically, spiritually or mentally? People with eating issues are often lacking in this area and it shows up in their desire to over or under-eat all or certain foods. This is where the nutrition part blends with intuitive eating. Part of taking care of yourself means including nutrient dense foods in your diet as often as possible, choosing colorful produce, beans, whole grains and of course chocolate (or whatever fun food you enjoy). Incorporating regular movement (Exercise) is a key element to feeling alive and energized. So yes, intuitive eaters choose what they want, based on their own needs & desires, not a diet book or anyone else (including a dietitian) telling them what to eat. My wish is that we all realize how important it is to take care of ourselves, especially during the holiday season. Remember - taking care of yourself does not mean depriving yourself.
